Japan Display Inc developed small- and middle-size LCD panels featuring a variety of its latest technologies for smartphones, tablet computers and automotive devices, respectively.
The LCD panels were developed by combining the latest technologies of Sony Mobile Display Corp (SMD), Toshiba Mobile Display Co Ltd (TMD) and Hitachi Displays Ltd. And Japan Display plans to sell the panels under the name of "Innovation Vehicle."
Panels for smartphones, tablet computers
The new LCD panel for smartphones is a 5-inch product that can display full-HD (1,920 x 1,080-pixel) video. It uses low-temperature polycrystalline silicon TFTs as driver elements and a new IPS technology for its display mode. As a result, the resolution and contrast ratio of the panel are as high as 438ppi and 2,000:1, respectively.
As for the sub-pixel alignment of the panel, Japan Display assigned four colors (red, green, blue and white) to each pixel to reduce the power consumption of backlight by half. Also, the company employed an in-cell technology incorporating a touch sensor function and realized a panel thickness of 1mm. The width of the panel's bezel is 1mm.
For tablet computers, Japan Display developed a 7-inch 2,048 x 1,536-pixel LCD panel with a resolution of 431ppi.
Panel for automotive devices
For automotive devices, Japan Display developed a 12.2-inch 1,920 x 720-pixel LCD panel featuring a semielliptical shape called "corner round cut." For its display mode, a new IPS technology was employed. The panel has a low power consumption and an embedded touch sensor function.
Japan Display will exhibit the new panels at FPD International 2012, which will take place from Oct 31 to Nov 2, 2012, in Yokohama, Japan.
