Oki Electric Industry Co Ltd developed a system that determines the age and gender of a person in front of a TV by using an external "video sensor."
The company expects that the system will be used for showing TV commercials in accordance with the age and gender of a person watching TV. At this point, however, it has only realized, for example, a function to turn on and off a TV depending on the existence of a viewer in the aim of saving energy.
The video sensor consists of a device embedded with video recognition software called "Signage Eye," which determines the age and gender of a person from the person's face, and a commercially available small camera.
Oki developed Signage Eye for digital signage used for marketing products. And the software is now being used for digital signage at some convenience stores. Specifically, it is used for recording the ages and genders of a person standing in front of a display with time to select effective advertising video.
