Egretcom Co Ltd developed a device that can measure the power consumption of an electric appliance via a power line.
The measurement device, which is scheduled to be released in January 2011 in Japan, can measure the power consumption of home electric appliances such as refrigerators and air conditioners, office automation equipment, facilities for convenience stores and so forth. The measured data can be transmitted via a power line and managed by using a dedicated application software on a PC.
Egretcom expects that managers of offices, convenience stores and manufacturing plants will employ the device to know how much power is being saved at those places.
The measurement device contains a power line communication module using HD-PLC technology and a watthour meter. By connecting the power plug of an electric appliance, such as an air conditioner and a refrigerator, to the device, the power consumption of the appliance can be measured. And the measured data can be transmitted via a power line by using Wavelet OFDM modulation. The frequency range used by the device is 2-30MHz.
The measurement device can be used both as a "master device," which supervises the entire network, and as a "terminal device." The function of the measurement device can be switched by using a selector switch. The master device sums up data and sends it to a host such as a PC. Up to 15 terminal devices can be connected to the master device.
