Hitachi Ltd displayed a 37-inch LCD TV whose thinnest part is 15mm as a reference exhibit at CEATEC JAPAN 2008.
The pixel count of the panel is 1,920 × 1,080 (full HD). The company aims to mass-produce the TV in 2009 or later, it said.
Hitachi exhibited a 32-inch LCD TV whose thinnest part is 19mm in the past year at CEATEC JAPAN 2007 (See related article). This time, the company achieved the 15mm thickness by reducing the thickness of all components including a backlight unit and power supply circuit.
The color reproduction range of the new LCD TV is as high as 150% of the HDTV specifications. It was realized by adopting three colors (RGB) of LEDs for the backlight source. The company declined to comment on the number of LEDs or alignment method for them.
Slim PDP exhibited too
In addition to the LCD TV, Hitachi showcased a 50-inch PDP TV whose thinnest part is 1.5 inches (about 35mm). A prototype of the same kind was displayed at 2008 International CES, which took place in Las Vegas, the US, in January 2008 (See related article 2). The company displayed it for the first time in Japan.
