Hyundai Motor Co of Korea announced July 15, 2008, that it started production of 1.25-liter inline four-cylinder DOHC engine at Hyundai Motor India Ltd's No. 2 engine plant in Chennai, India.

The engine is the latest version in the Kappa series and will be used in Hyundai's "i10" and "i20" compact cars. The i10 is already sold in India with the 1.2-liter version from the same series, but the latest engine, which is intended for use in Europe and other regions, is designed differently from the Indian version. The i20 is scheduled to be on display at the Paris Motor Show in fall 2008.

The new engine will be manufactured at the No. 2 engine plant, along with the 1.2-liter engine for India. The annual output of the plant is 250,000 units. With the existing No. 1 engine plant, Hyundai Motor India will have the total manufacturing capacity of 570,000 units per year.

With a bore of 71mm and a stroke of 78.8mm, which is 3.2mm longer than the stroke of the engine for use in India, the new engine has a displacement of 1,248cc. The engine for Europe has a maximum output of 57kW (77.8PS)/6000rpm, which is lower than the Indian engine, while the maximum torque (118Nm/4,000rpm) is higher than the Indian version (112Nm/4,000rpm).

With the use of an aluminum die-cast cylinder block, a plastic intake manifold and a lighter piston, the engine weight has been reduced to just 84kg.

To reduce the friction loss, the offset crankshaft, the roller rocker arm and the piston skirt are coated with molybdenum disulfide, and the oil ring is coated with CrN.

When equipped with the new engine, the i10 ensures a fuel consumption efficiency of 5.0L/100km in the combined test mode of the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC). The CO2 emissions are less than 120g/km (specifically 119g/km).
