Toyota Motor Corp is developing an all-solid battery in the aim of commercializing it in early 2020s.
Didier Leroy, a board member and executive vice president of Toyota, made this announcement at Tokyo Motor Show 2017, which was open to the public from Oct 28 to Nov 5, 2017.
Toyota has long been engaged in the research and development of all-solid battery, but this is the first time that the company has mentioned when to make it practical.
Before Toyota made the announcement this time, Samsung SDI Co Ltd had probably been the only company that had announced when to commercialize an all-solid battery. In 2016, Samsung SDI announced a plan to mass-produce the battery in 2025.
So, this time, Toyota declared its intention to develop an all-solid battery earlier than Samsung SDI. In the past, all-solid batteries were expected to be developed in 2030, but some companies started to significantly accelerate the schedule.
Leroy, who took the podium this time, also announced that (1) the research team for the battery consists of more than 200 engineers, (2) the battery has a potential to drastically increase drive range and (3) Toyota has applied for the largest number of patents for all-solid batteries in the world.
The energy density and output density of all-solid batteries have been rapidly increasing in the past few years. Toyota mentioned the all-solid battery as a technology that replaces existing lithium-ion (Li-ion) rechargeable batteries at the 57th Battery Symposium, an academic conference on batteries, which took place in November 2016 in Japan.
At the conference, Toyota announced that it was expecting to realize an all-solid battery with an energy density of about 300-800kWh/L, which is up to about three times higher than that of existing Li-ion rechargeable batteries.
