Continued from Daihatsu, Toyota Release New Compact Minivan (1)
Newly-developed turbo engine
The new minivan was developed based on the platform of the new "Boon/Passo." Its power train incorporates (1) the "1KR-FE" 1.0L in-line three-cylinder naturally-aspirated (NA) engine, which is also used for the Boon/Passo, or (2) "1KR-VET," which is a turbo version of the 1KR-FE. As a transmission, the minivan comes with a CVT (continuously variable transmission).
The maximum output and maximum torque of the NA engine model are 51kW/6,000rpm and 92N·m/4,400rpm, respectively. The fuel efficiency of the two-wheel-drive model of the minivan is 24.6km/L (approx 57.9mpg) under the JC08 test mode. It is slightly lower than the fuel efficiency of the gasoline engine model of Suzuki Motor Corp's "Solio" (24.8km/L), which is a rival of the new minivan.
The maximum output and maximum torque of the turbo engine model are 72kW/6,000rpm and 140N·m/2,400-4,400rpm, respectively. Its fuel efficiency is 21.8km/L under the JC08 test mode. With a low rotation speed of 2,400rpm, it generates a maximum torque equivalent to that of a 1.5L NA engine.
Minimum turning radius equivalent to light cars
The dimensions of the new minivan are 3,700 (L) x 1,670 (W) x 1,735mm (H), and its wheelbase is 2,490mm. Though the minivan is larger than Daihatsu's "Tanto" tall wagon, its minimum turning radius is as short as 4.6m, realizing a maneuverability equivalent to that of the Tanto, whose minimum turning radius is 4.4m.
The interior space of the minivan measures 2,180 (L) x 1,480 (W) x 1,355mm (H), which is smaller than that of the Solio.
As a safety feature, the minivan is equipped with "Smart Assist II," which is expected to mitigate damages caused at the time of driving in urban areas and also used for other vehicles of Daihatsu as well as the new Boon/Passo.
With a camera, laser radar device and sonar, it provides five functions: (1) (vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian) collision alarm, (2) (vehicle-to-vehicle) collision avoidance support brake, (3) erroneous start prevention (forward and backward), (4) lane departure alarm and (5) preceding vehicle departure notification.
