Mitsubishi Electric Corp announced Nov 9, 2017, that a floating solar power plant with an output of about 2.6MW has been completed in Miki-cho, Kita-gun, Kagawa Prefecture, Japan.
The mega (large-scale) solar power, "Hiragi Oike Floating Solar Power Plant," was installed on a reservoir called "Hiragi Oike." Mitsubishi Electric supplied power generation facilities. The power producer of the plant is Sumitomo Mitsui Construction Co Ltd. SMC Tech Co Ltd, which is affiliated with Sumitomo Mitsui Construction, provided EPC (engineering, procurement and construction) services.
It is the largest-scale floating solar power plant for which Mitsubishi Electric supplied facilities, the company said. Specifically, it provided 9,504 solar panels and PV inverters integrated with high-voltage power receiving/transforming facilities.
While the solar panel has standard specifications, it realizes a long-term guarantee period even on water, where moisture resistance becomes an issue. For the solar panel, Mitsubishi Electric employed a three-layer PET film featuring high weather and moisture resistance. Also, corrosion-resistant plating was applied to the frame, screws and protection bars so that the panel can deal with environments on water without customization, the company claims.
Mitsubishi Electric said that the development, production and quality management of the solar panel are done in Japan. And the company offers "linear output guarantee" (output deterioration rate: 20% or less in 25 years) and "defect guarantee" (guarantee period: 10 years). Moreover, lead-free solder is used for assembling the solar panel in consideration of environmental impact at the time of disposal.
In regard to the selection of power generation facilities, Sumitomo Mitsui Construction said that it put priority on economy such as cost-performance balance. Also, because the plant is the company's first floating solar power plant, it selected products of manufacturers that can provide appropriate support in Japan in case some troubles occur (See related article).
The PV inverter employed for the plant is Toshiba Mitsubishi-Electric Industrial Systems Corp's (TMEIC) product supporting DC 1,000V.
Mitsubishi Electric said that it will continue to make efforts to deliver and install power generation facilities for floating mega solar plants.
