The "Brighturf" LED-based lighting system promotes the growth of natural grass. The LED was once employed for a plant factory and uses high-efficiency chips manufactured in Japan. The width of the system is 16.75m when its arm is extended.

A smaller version of the Brighturf was exhibited at Stadia & Arena Asia Pacific 2016. It measures approximately 110 x 95cm. Three units are usually combined when in use. It is expected to be used at golf courses, etc.

Sony Business Solutions Corp exhibited an LED-based lighting system that promotes the growth of natural grass at Stadia & Arena Asia Pacific 2016, which took place from Sept 26 to 28, 2016, at Yokohama Arena.

The system, "Brighturf," was developed in collaboration with Kashima Antlers FC, Shinshu University, Showa Denko KK and Sekishin Denki KK. Sony Business Solutions is a company that is affiliated with the Sony group and provides solutions using broadcasting equipment and commercial-use products.

There has already been a lighting system that uses halogen lamps to grow turf grass. But it generates heat and withers grass in Japan, which is a high-temperature, high-humidity country. The Brighturf is the world's first LED-based lighting system used to grow grass, Sony Business Solutions said.

The Brighturf emits red (wavelength: 660nm) and blue (450nm) lights, which are optimal for photosynthesis, from a height of 1.5m to an area of 90m2. It speeds up the growth of grass by six times. As a result, it enables turf grass in a shady area to grow as fast as grass in a sunny area, the company said.
