Haha Generation Corp, a Taiwan-based electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, developed a truck using a series-hybrid system.

It generates electricity by using a diesel engine to turn a generator. The generated electricity is stored in batteries located in the center right and center left parts of the vehicle (capacity: 20kW).

The truck is driven by using a motor (rated output: 60kW) powered by both the generator and the batteries. Haha Generation is currently conducting a driving test of the truck, and its drive range is expected to be more than 400km (approx 249 miles). Its release date and price have not been decided yet.

For the newly-developed hybrid system, Haha Generation employed a mechanism that generates hydraulic pressure when the tires are driven by the motor. Energy is regenerated by using the hydraulic pressure at the time of braking, improving fuel efficiency.

This time, an yttrium lithium battery was employed. It prevents heat generation at the time of charging and improves safety, compared with lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries that Tesla Inc and Nissan Motor Co Ltd use for their EVs, according to Haha Generation. The efficiency of charging at the time of running is improved by switching between two batteries.

The mass and load capacity of the truck are 6.5t and 3t, respectively. The company aims to sell it in Taiwan and China.

"While the development of EVs is active, there is a shortage of charging stations," Mark Lio said. "Series-hybrid systems are suited (for the Taiwanese and Chinese markets)."

Haha Generation exhibited the truck at 2017 Taipei Ampa & Auto Tronics Taipei, a trade show on parts of cars and motorbikes, which took place from April 19 to 22, 2017, at Nangang Exhibition Center, Taipei World Trade Center (TWTC).
