Taiyo Holdings Co Ltd announced Feb 5, 2019, that it has started operation of three floating solar power plants using three ponds in the Kinki region of Japan.

All of the three plants were developed and are operated by Taiyo Green Energy Co Ltd (Ranzan-machi, Saitama Prefecture), a subsidiary of Taiyo Holdings.

They are Taiyo Green Energy's third to fifth solar power plants, following (1) a 1.153MW floating solar power plant installed on the surface of a balancing reservoir of the Ranzan Hanamidai Industrial Park near the company's headquarters (operation started in October 2015) and (2) a floating solar power plant with an output of about 318kW using a pond adjacent to the company's main factory (operation started in December 2017) (See related article 1).

Taiyo Ink Mfg Co Ltd (Ranzan-machi, Saitama Prefecture), which is affiliated with the Taiyo Holdings group, announced that it would manufacture products for Apple Inc by using "100% renewable energy" (See related article 2) based on the operation of the first two floating solar power plants.

The floating solar power plant with an output of about 318kW (the second plant) using a pond located adjacent to the factory is a self-consumption type, and all the electricity generated at the plant is used by the factory. The other four floating solar power plants were developed and are operated by using the feed-in tariff (FIT) scheme.

For the three floating solar power plants built in the Kinki region this time, Taiyo Green Energy obtained projects that had been developed by other companies and continued the development of them to commercialize them. The company plans to develop projects across Japan by using similar schemes.
