"In-vehicle Ethernet will be employed in the auto industry in earnest in about 2020," said Hideki Goto, Automotive Software Engineering Division, Toyota Motor Corp.
Goto engaged in the development of technologies related to in-vehicle LAN at Toyota Motor Corp and is the chief of the Next-generation LAN WG (working group) of JASPAR (Japan Automotive Software Platform and Architecture), an organization that standardizes in-vehicle LAN interfaces.
He delivered a speech on Ethernet, which is drawing attention as a next-generation high-speed in-vehicle network, at a seminar organized by Nikkei Electronics July 9, 2014. The title of the speech is "the Latest Trend of In-vehicle Ethernet Network."
BMW AG employed in-vehicle Ethernet for video transmission for the periphery monitoring system of its "X5" SUV released in September 2013. The communication network that has been widely employed for communication devices, personal computers and home appliances is now being introduced to automobiles and drawing attention in the auto industry.
Goto pointed out that "fail safe function," which helps quickly recover from a failure, and the strengthening of "real-time property," which is required for control systems, are important for in-vehicle Ethernet.
Currently, standard specifications are being developed at, for example, IEEE to strengthen the fail safe function and the real-time property. In regard to the real-time property, "IEEE802.1TSN (Time Sensitive Networking)," a data transmission standard supporting control networks, is planned to be established in about 2016. In addition, several other standards are expected to be established by 2015-2017.
Goto considers that Ethernet will be gradually employed in the auto industry along with such trends of standardization. In-vehicle Ethernet, which was first adopted as a communication network for cameras, will begin to be employed for driving support systems in about 2015, and the use of gigabit-class Ethernet will begin to spread in about 2018, he said. And many automakers will employ it in about 2020.
"From now, IP transmission will begin to be applied to in-vehicle networks," Goto said. "At first, it will be used locally in a vehicle but eventually be linked to IP networks outside the vehicle. At that time, vehicles will become part of IoT (Internet of things) in a true sense."
