Citizen Finetech Miyota Co Ltd developed a 0.5-inch LCD panel with a pixel count of 1,600 x 1,200 (UXGA) for the electronic view finders (EVFs) of single-lens reflex (SLR) cameras.
Citizen Finetech improved resolution from 1,280 x 960 of its previous 0.5-inch LCD panel for EVFs to 1,600 x 1,200. And the new panel is one of the highest-resolution 0.5-inch and smaller LCD panels in the world. The company plans to start shipping samples in the summer of 2014 and begin volume production within fiscal 2015.
Citizen Finetech Miyota has been developing LCD panels using ferroelectric liquid crystals since the latter half of the 1990s. And those panels have been employed for many EVFs. This time, the company realized the 0.5-inch high-resolution LCD panel by making improvements to the design of the driving circuit and improving driving speed.
When employed for an EVF, the new panel enables to focus on an object with a high accuracy and can replace an optical view finder. Also, supporting up to 3x speed driving with the maximum resolution, it can prevent color breakup, which is a problem caused by the field sequential method, the company said.
Citizen Finetech Miyota acquired the display unit of Micron Technology Inc in August 2012. Through the acquisition, it strengthened its ferroelectric liquid crystal and VLSI technologies, accelerating the development of the new panel, the company said.
