Meidensha Corp prototyped an inverter for electric vehicles by using diodes and MOSFETs (metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistors) based on SiC (silicon carbide) substrates.
Meidensha exhibited the inverter at the 2014 Automotive Engineering Exposition, a trade show that took place from May 21 to 23, 2014, in Yokohama, Japan. The output density of the inverter is as high as 60kW/L. The company aims to commercialize it in about 2020.
The inverter is integrated with a driving motor with a maximum output of 60kW, maximum torque of 160N·m and maximum speed of 12,000rpm. It eliminates the need for a power cable between an inverter and motor, realizing a small size. The dimensions of the inverter integrated with the motor are 330 x 300 x 305mm.
