A number of atmospheric pressure sensors capable of detecting altitude changes in increments of centimeters or meters were exhibited at the 6th Int'l Automotive Electronics Technology Expo, which took place from Jan 15 to 17, 2014, in Tokyo.
They are targeted at, for example, personal navigation devices that identify which floor the user is on as well as automotive security devices.
Seiko Instruments Inc (SII) developed and announced a pressure sensor that can detect a pressure change of 0.5Pa, which is equivalent to an altitude change of 5cm. Though the company applied a well-known principle for detecting a pressure by the deflection of a thin film to the pressure detection part, it employed its own structure that makes it easy to improve resolution.
STMicroelectronics N.V. developed and exhibited a digital-output pressure sensor capable of detecting a pressure change of 0.1mbar (10Pa), which is equivalent to an altitude change of 1m.
