Mitsubishi Electric Corp will release the "4-wavelength integrated 100Gbps EML TOSA," which realizes a data transmission speed of 100Gbps with one optical fiber cable, April 1, 2014.

The first product will be the "FU-401REA," whose compact package contains four 1.3μm-band 25Gbps EML (electro-absorption modulated laser diode) elements and an optical multiplexer. By wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM), the number of TOSAs (transmitter optical sub assembly) was reduced from four to one, realizing the 100Gbps transmission rate with one optical fiber cable.

The FU-401REA is as small as 8.8 x 26.5 x 5.6mm and has a footprint about 1/4 that of four units of the FU-412REA, which is Mitsubishi Electric's previous product. Also, the company raised the upper limit of the operating temperature range by about 15°C by making improvements to the EML element.

Furthermore, Mitsubishi Electric reduced the maximum power consumption to 2W and halved the amount of power required to lower temperature to a level within the operating temperature range. As a result, the FU-401REA can be used in compact optical transceivers such as CFP2. Because it is equipped with a flexible printed circuit board, it contributes to improving the productivity of optical transceivers.
