Kyushu Region Has Largest Mega-solar Capacity in Japan
The Kyushu Bureau of Economy, Trade and Industry announced data on the start-up and authorization of renewable energy-based power generation facilities in the Kyushu region of Japan as of the end of June 2013.
When the bureau collected data on the certified and actual outputs of 1,000kW or higher-output mega-solar (large-scale photovoltaic (PV)) power plants in the Hokkaido, Tohoku, Kanto, Chubu, Kinki, Chugoku, Kyushu and Okinawa regions, it was found that the plants in the Kyushu region collectively had both the highest certified and actual outputs.
The certified and actual outputs of the mega-solar power plants in the Kyushu region were about 3,213,000kW (3,213MW) and about 219,000kW (219MW), respectively, which were the highest of all the regions and followed by the Kanto region (certified output: 2,974,000kW or 2,974MW, actual output: 178,000kW or 178MW).
The certified outputs in the Kyushu and Kanto regions are much higher than those in other regions. The Hokkaido and Tohoku regions, whose certified outputs were almost the same, came third and fourth, respectively.
On the other hand, the number of authorized mega-solar power plants in the Kanto region (758) was larger than that in the Kyushu region (696). This means that there were many larger-scale mega-solar power plants in the Kyushu region.
By prefecture, Kagoshima had the highest output from mega-solar plants in the Kyushu region (about 782,000 kW or 782MW), followed by Oita (about 640,000 kW or 640MW) and Nagasaki (about 579,000 kW or 579MW).
