Murata Manufacturing Co Ltd announced wireless modules supporting Bluetooth v4.0 low energy.

They are the "LBCA2BZZFZ," which does not incorporate an antenna, and the "LBCA2HNZYZ," which incorporates an antenna. Both of them are surface-mount modules.

The two modules have already been certified for the radio law and the Bluetooth standard, making it possible to drastically reduce development costs.

The size of the LBCA2BZZFZ, which is not equipped with an antenna, is 5.4 x 4.4 x 1.0mm. It is the world's smallest Bluetooth 4.0 wireless module, Murata said. The size of the LBCA2HNZYZ, which has an antenna, is 7.4 x 7.0 x 1.0mm.

The output and communication range of the modules are 0dBm and 30m, respectively. Their instantaneous peak current and deep sleep current are 4.5mA and 0.6μA or less. At the time of data transmission (when 20-byte data is transmitted every second), the average current is 6μA. They operate for four years with a "CR2032" coin battery.

The modules are targeted at products supporting Bluetooth low energy (Bluetooth Smart products). Those products include (1) devices for sports and fitness such as thermometers, blood glucose meters, heart rate meters, blood pressure meters and activity meters, (2) wearable computers that look like wristwatches and glasses, (3) home appliances and entertainment devices such as remotes, toys, keys and lamps and (4) PC accessories including mice and keyboards.

The modules have all the protocol stacks necessary for Bluetooth v4.0. They support profiles such as FindMe, Proximity, Time, Health Thermometer, Heart Rate, Blood Pressure, Glucose, HID over GATT and MSDP (Murata Simple Data Profile). Murata will exhibit the modules at Ceatec Japan 2013, which will take place from Oct 1 to 5, 2013, in Chiba Prefecture, Japan.
