Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) Ltd and Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI) Ltd announced that they will participate in the joint project for developing the "Trent 1000-TEN" and "Trent XWB-97," which are aircraft engines being developed by Rolls-Royce Group plc.
MHI will develop and manufacture the combustor modules of the two engines and manufacture their low-pressure turbine blades and the intermediate-pressure turbine disk of the Trent XWB-97. KHI will design, manufacture and assembly an intermediate pressure compressor (IPC) module.
The IPC module is one of the eight main modules that compose the engines. It is about 1.5m in diameter and 1.5m in length. It consists of about 4,000 parts and is manufactured at KHI's Seishin Plant in Kobe City, Japan.
The Trent 1000-TEN is for the Boeing 787 Dreamliner and was developed by improving the fuel efficiency and thrust of the "Trent 1000," which is currently used for the aircraft. The Trent XWB-97 will be employed for Airbus SAS's "A350-100" and was developed by improving the fuel efficiency and thrust of the "Trent XWB-84." The Trent XWB-84 is used for the "A350-800" and "A350-900," which are currently being tested.
This time, MHI and KHI will participate in the project as "risk & revenue sharing partners" (RRSPs). While an RRSP has a right to receive part of every revenue such as from the sales and repair business of the engines, replacement parts, etc, it has to share all the burdens and risks such as of development, volume production and sales in proportion to their shares.
