Omron Healthcare Co Ltd announced a device that checks the state of sleep at a press conference in Tokyo June 16, 2013.
It is possible to checks the user's sleep state just by placing the device, "Omron Sleepmeter HSL-002C," near the pillow. The HSL-002C is the successor to the "Omron Sleepmeter HSL-001" (See related article). It will be released June 20, 2013.
The HSL-002C detects the movements of bedclothes with its embedded acceleration sensor and measures time from falling asleep to getting out of bed. The latest model has a function to detect roll-overs.
By sending measured data to Sleep Biological Clock, a smartphone application, it is possible to show (1) sleep duration, (2) the time it takes to fall asleep and (3) the occurrence of roll-over in graphs whose x-axis represents 24 hours..
Moreover, the application evaluates one week of data by using five indexes, (1) sleep duration, (2) the time of getting out of bed, (3) the time of going to bed, (4) the time it takes to fall asleep and (5) the time it takes to get out of bed after wake-up. Then, it judges the user's sleep, shows one of the nine animals that represent different sleep states and gives advice for each type of sleep.
While the HSL-001 only supports Android, the HSL-002C supports the iPhone, too. Therefore, the HSL-002 supports not only NFC but also Bluetooth 4.0.
Though there is no manufacturer's suggested retail price, the expected retail price of the HSL-002 is ¥6,980 (approx US$73.6). Omron Healthcare aims to sell 150,000 units in one year after the release.
