Fujitsu Ltd, Fujitsu Frontech Ltd and Fujitsu Laboratories Ltd developed what they claim is the world's smallest, thinnest and lightest contact-free vein authentication sensor.
The dimensions of the sensor are 25.0 x 25.0 x 6.0mm. The small volume was realized by making improvements to its components such as the light source and imaging devices as well as changing component layout. Its weight is about 4.0g, which is 50% or more lighter than the company's previous vein sensor.
The sensor is smaller than any other vein authentication sensor in the world including those using veins of a finger, dorsal hand, etc. Therefore, it can be easily embedded in slim notebook computers, tablet computers and other electronic devices, Fujitsu said.
Moreover, in the aims of using the new sensor with existing compact sensors or replacing them with the new sensor, an automatic verification function was employed. The function continuously shoots pictures of palm veins, instantly chooses a picture optimal for authentication and automatically verifies it.
The formats for registration and authentication data and the way of moving a hand are the same as those used for the existing sensors. Also, the new sensor's accuracy of authentication is the same as that of the existing sensors (a false-negatives rate of 0.01% (a single retry) and a false-positives rate of 0.00008%).
Fujitsu plans to employ the new sensor for its personal computers for use in corporations. But the company does not intend to sell it as a product.
