Toshiba Corp developed a sensor module that can collect biological information such as pulse wave, electrocardiogram, body temperature and body motion at the same time and wirelessly transmit them to a smartphone, tablet computer, etc.
The sensor module, "Silmee (Smart healthcare Intelligent Monitor Engine & Ecosystem)," is targeted at cloud-based healthcare services. This time, Toshiba realized pulse wave, electrocardiogram, body temperature and body motion sensors in a small, light-weight case that measures approximately 25 x 60mm and weighs about 10g and prototyped a wearable sensor that can transmit data in real time and can be attached to a human body.
The new sensor module can collect, process, store and wirelessly transmit several kinds of biological information at the same time just by connecting a few peripheral devices such as an antenna and battery. Though the analog front ends of the sensor have different specifications for each kind of information to be collected, they are integrated on one chip by using pseudo SoC technologies.
The chip is contained in a 14.5 x 14.5mm package together with a 32-bit embedded processor and a dual mode Bluetooth bare chip. The pseudo SoC, which was developed by Toshiba, is a technology that realizes the small size of SoC and the flexibility of multi-chip module at the same time by densely forming components on a wafer.
Toshiba plans to provide the newly-developed sensor module for fields tests and research and development projects while tying up with partners in various fields and promoting the development of a variety of services and applications software. Furthermore, by utilizing the flexibility of the pseudo SoC, the company aims to add various sensors being developed at, for example, universities.
Toshiba will announce the latest results at ISMICT 2013 (the 7th International Symposium on Medical Information and Communication Technology), which runs from March 6 to 8, 2013, in Tokyo.
