Sanwa Supply Inc developed a measurement device (smart plug) that enables to check power usage with a smartphone and released it Feb 26, 2013.
Sanwa Supply is a Japan-based firm that sells peripheral devices for personal computers. With the smart plug, "TAP-TST13," it becomes easy to measure the power consumption of a device (up to 1,000W), integral power consumption, etc.
The smart plug is used between a power outlet and a device whose power consumption is measured. In other words, the smart plug is attached to the outlet, and, then, a smartphone and the power plug of a device are connected to the smart plug.
An application software needs to be installed in the smartphone in advance. Then, when the smartphone is connected to a wireless LAN, it becomes possible to measure not only power consumption and integral power consumption but also voltage, current, power supply frequency, power factor, cumulative electricity cost and the amount of emitted carbon dioxide in real time with the application.
In addition, the software includes a "schedule management" function that automatically cuts off electricity when a preset time has elapsed and starts providing electricity again at a preset time.
The dimensions of the smart plug are 45 (W) x 37 (D) and 92mm (H), and its mass is about 110g. Is expected retail price is ¥24,800 (approx US$269, including tax).
