Huawei Technologies Co Ltd announced Feb 24, 2013, the world's first smartphone equipped with an HD in-cell touch panel for Mobile World Congress 2013, which runs from Feb 25 to 28, 2013, in Barcelona, Spain.
The smartphone, "Ascend P2," supports the "LTE Category 4," whose theoretical download traffic speed is 150Mbps, which the company claims is the world's fastest.
It is equipped with a 4.7-inch IPS LCD panel whose pixel count is 1,280 x 720. It has a so-called in-cell structure in which a touch panel function is embedded in an LCD display. As a result, it became possible to reduce the thickness of the touch panel and LCD display combined by 30%, Huawei said.
The glass cover of the smartphone is the second-generation model of the Gorilla Glass, or Corning Inc's chemically-strengthened glass. Because Huawei employed a technology called "magic touch," the screen can be operated with a gloved hand.
The application processor of the phone is the "K3V2" (1.5GHz quad-core processor), which was developed by HiSilicon Technologies Co Ltd, a subsidiary of Huawei. The capacities of the DRAM and embedded flash memory are 1 Gbyte and 16 Gbytes, respectively, which are relatively small for the latest smartphones. The camera on the back of the phone is equipped with a 13-Mpixel back illuminated CMOS image sensor.
The Ascend P2 comes with a large-capacity (2,420mAh) rechargeable battery. Furthermore, Huawei reduced power consumption and charging time by 30% and 25% or more, respectively, compared with other smartphones, by using its own power-saving technologies including "Quick Power Control (QPC)" and "Automated Discontinuous Reception (ADRX)."
The operating system of the smartphone is Android 4.1. The phone measures 136 x 67 x 8.4mm and weighs 122g. It will be released worldwide in the second quarter of 2013. In Europe, it will be released by Orange, a France-based firm, in June 2013 at a price of 399 euro.
