Fujitsu Laboratories Ltd announced Jan 21, 2013, that it has developed a technology to exchange files between a PC and a smartphone just by taking a picture of the PC screen with the phone's camera.
The new technology enables, for example, to send a picture taken with a smartphone to a near PC and to send a PowerPoint file stored in a PC to a smartphone. It is also possible to exchange files by taking a picture of a PC screen projected by a projector.
Therefore, a PowerPoint file stored in a smartphone can be transmitted by using the phone to take a picture of a projected PC screen. And projected materials can be transmitted to the smartphones of audience during a presentation.
The new technology is based on the "image-mediated data transmission technology," which Fujitsu announced in June 2012. This time, data is transmitted by using areas whose brightnesses are slowly changing on a PC screen. The technology leverages the fact that it is difficult for humans to recognize slow changes in brightness.
In a demonstration at a press conference where Fujitsu Laboratories announced the new technology, the company used the image-mediated data transmission technology to exchange data between a PC and a smartphone connected to the same LAN by transmitting "part of the PC's IP address at a rate of 16bps."
This data exchange was realized by accessing the PC from the smartphone by using FTPS (file transfer protocol over SSL/TLS). When a file is transmitted from a PC to a smartphone, the file shown on the most front window on a PC screen is transmitted.
Fujitsu Laboratories plans to continue the development of the technology, aiming to commercialize it in fiscal 2014. It will demonstrate the technology in its booth at Mobile World Congress 2013, which will take place from Feb 25 to 29, 2013, in Barcelona, Spain.
