Toshiba Corp announced that it has developed a four-legged robot for use at the Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant of Tokyo Electric Power Company Inc (TEPCO).
The robot will be used for surveillance and recovery operations in places where humans cannot work. Equipped with a camera, dosemeter, etc, it can be remotely controlled to check the state of the inside of the power plant.
With an algorithm that Toshiba developed for controlling the robot walking on an irregular ground or steps and its multi-jointed structure, the robot can walk on four legs while avoiding obstacles as well as go up and down stairs. Therefore, it enables operations in places where wheeled and crawler-type robots cannot be used.
This time, Toshiba also developed a small vehicle that can be connected to the robot with a cable and take pictures of facilities, equipment and pipes located at the ends of narrow paths and behind structures.
The company plans to continue the development of the robot so that it will be used for installing shields, stopping water leakage, taking out obstacles, etc.
