Fujitsu Ltd developed a pedometer for dogs and exhibited it at CEATEC JAPAN 2012, which took place from Oct 2 to 6, 2012, in Chiba Prefecture, Japan.
Fujitsu plans to release the pedometer, "Wandant," in the fall of 2012 and provide a cloud service for it. The expected price of the pedometer is ¥10,000 (approx US$128), which the company said is slightly higher than the cost of cutting dog's hair.
The Wandant consists of a three-axis acceleration sensor, thermo-hygrometer, FeliCa module, volatile memory, microcomputer, button battery, etc. It counts the number of paces of a dog and checks its living environment (temperature and humidity) so that the owner can use the data for ensuring the dog's health, Fujitsu said. The pedometer, whose weight is 20g or less, is attached to a dog collar.
For counting the number of paces, the three-axis acceleration sensor is used to detect movements of dog's forefeet. When a dog is walking, a landing of one forefoot is counted as one pace. When a dog is running, landings of two forefeet are counted as one pace.
Because the sensor is optimized for dogs' motions, it is not possible to obtain accurate data when the pedometer is used for other animals like cats. It detects changes of a dog's living environment by using the thermo-hygrometer.
Two weeks of data can be stored in the pedometer. Fujitsu will provide a service for transmitting measured data to a cloud via a FeliCa-compatible smartphone and storing it. Changes of a dog's state of activity can be seen in chronological order on a website that can be checked on personal computers and smartphones. It is also possible to write about a dog's weight, meals, etc on the website.
"When it is widely used, we will provide various information for each type of dog," the company said.
Fujitsu considers establishing the "Animal Medical Cloud," which integrates data measured by the Wandant and information about veterinary hospitals, kennels, etc on a cloud. And the company aims to make it a social infrastructure in the pet industry by including advanced medical facilities, research institutes, pharmaceutical companies, insurance firms, etc in the future.
