Murata Manufacturing Co Ltd exhibited a "walking measurement system" made by attaching a pressure sensor and wireless module to shoes at CEATEC JAPAN 2012, which runs from Oct 2 to 6, 2012, in Chiba Prefecture, Japan.
By monitoring the weight shift of a person wearing the shoes, it becomes possible to check forms of running, walking, golfing, etc as well as effects of rehabilitation.
Data measured with the pressure sensor can be transmitted to a smartphone by using the "Bluetooth SMART (Bluetooth Low Energy)" module. At Murata Manufacturing's booth, the change of the pressure applied to feet was shown on a smartphone screen by using an application that the company prototyped for the exhibit.
Murata Manufacturing developed the walking measurement system to promote the use of its pressure sensor and Bluetooth SMART module. The pressure sensor was developed by using a transparent piezoelectric film. Its piezoelectric output constant and light transmittance are as high as 180 x 10-3Vm/N and 98%, respectively. The sensor can detect not only extension and contraction but also torsion.
