NTT Docomo Inc had its booth for the first time at IFA. At IFA 2012, Docomo Communications Laboratories Europe GmbH, NTT Docomo's research institute in Europe, introduced a mobile technology called "3D Face Avatar."
The 3D Face Avatar is a technology to synthesize a smiling face, angry face and other three-dimensional expressions based on a facial picture taken by a mobile camera. When an SMS (short message service), etc is used with a mobile phone, a text message can be sent with an image synthesized with the technology to show the facial expression of the sender.
The recipient can check the synthesized facial expression of the sender on the display of a mobile phone. As a result, the recipient can see the feeling of the sender.
"This technology is being developed as one of the 'Service Enabler Network' technologies, which provide various added values, such as automatic speech translation, to networks," NTT Docomo said. "And it is ready to be added to mobile devices."
