Mitsubishi Electric Corp will start to test a system capable of directly providing surplus electricity that is regenerated through the braking of a railcar and cannot be consumed by trains running nearby to the facilities of a rail station.
The test will be conducted at Tokyo Metro Co Ltd's Nishi-funabashi Electric Power Substation for about two months from mid-August 2012. In the test, Mitsubishi Electric will test the energy-saving effect and functions of the system. To evaluate the energy-saving effect, the company will examine how the regenerated electricity of a railcar will be used at a rail station and check the validity of the results of simulations that were conducted by the company.
From the results of the simulations, Mitsubishi Electric estimated that it is possible to effectively use about 600kWh of electricity (about 40kWh x 15 hours), projecting that 16% of the power consumed at the Nishi-funabashi Station (in 15 hours) can be provided by the system.
For the evaluation of the system's functions, Mitsubishi Electric will check the conversion of regenerated 1,500V direct-current (DC) electricity to alternate-current (AC) electricity and the electricity supply to lighting facilities, air-conditioning systems, etc via the distribution system of the rail station. Moreover, the company will check the influences of the power supply to the station's AC system and the compatibility with the entire power system.
Based on the results of the test, Mitsubishi Electric aims to supply the system from April 2013. The input and output voltages of the system are DC 1,500V and AC 210V, respectively (three phases, 50Hz/60Hz). Its rated output is 50kW (continuous) and 200kW (30 seconds, three minute interval). It is a self-cooled system and placed outdoors such as under or at the end of a platform.
