Panasonic Healthcare Co Ltd will start to accept orders for the "Digital Mirror," which helps medical rehabilitation, July 20, 2012.
The Digital Mirror helps rehabilitation trainings, measures the trainings and records data by combining a mirror and video displayed on it. For a start, the company will start to accept orders from hospitals and nursing homes in the Kinki region of Japan, planning to gradually expand the area to the entire country. The manufacture's suggested retail price of the product is ¥2.8 million (approx US$35,412).
The user of the mirror can do trainings while comparing the user's figure reflected on the mirror and a good example displayed on it. It offers exercise programs such as "Stretch," "Muscle Strength," "Upper Limb's Range of Motion" and "Balance." Also, it is possible to select "upright position" or "sitting position," depending on the state of the user.
Furthermore, the Digital Mirror is capable of six types of measurements that are used for medical rehabilitation. They are (1) "balancing on one foot with opened eyes," (2) "functional reach," (3) "Timed Up & Go," (4) "the length of barycentric orbit," (5) "measurement of range of motion" and (6) "measurement of tilt." Their details are as follows.
(1) Measurement of how long the user can stand on one foot (with opened eyes) (up to 60 seconds)
(2) Measurement of a distance to which the user's upper limb is extended when the user is standing sideways, holding a red (or green) ball with a handle and bending the upper limb by 90°
(3) Measurement of the time it takes to stand up from a chair, go back and forth a distance of 3m once and sit on the chair again
(4) Measurement of the sway, length and area of a barycentric orbit
(5) Measurement of the inclination of the upper limb
(6) Measurement of tilt based on the inclination of the line drawn between the shoulders, body trunk, etc
Equipped with an embedded camera, the Digital Mirror takes video of the user from the front and stores it. It is also possible to take video from two directions by using a separately-sold camera. Measurement results and video data can be separately recorded and stored for each user so that it becomes possible to show measurement data in graph form and compare data recorded before and after medical rehabilitation.
