Mitsubishi Chemical Corp announced that the conversion efficiency of its organic thin-film photovoltaic (PV) cell has reached 11.0%.
The announcement was made at the 61st SPSJ Annual Meeting and on the company's Website.
Though the efficiency was measured by using a cell whose size is only several millimeters on a side, it is higher than the 10.7% efficiency that was announced by Heliatek, a Germany-based PV cell manufacturer, in April 2012 (See related article). And it is currently the world's highest efficiency of an organic thin-film PV cell.
This time, Mitsubishi Chemical also announced that its pilot plant for manufacturing organic thin-film PV cells by using a roll-to-roll (R2R) method has started operations in Okayama Prefecture, Japan. At the meeting, a roll of organic thin-film PV cell manufactured at the plant was shown. Its width was slightly less than 20cm.
