Sharp Corp exhibited a prototype of the latest cell of the Blacksolar, which is the company's single-crystal silicon-based photovoltaic (PV) battery using back-side electrodes, at PV Expo 2012.
PV Expo 2012 is a trade show that runs from Feb 29 to March 2, 2012, in Tokyo.
In the case of a 90 x 90mm cell, the new Blacksolar is expected to have a cell conversion efficiency of 21.5% and a module conversion efficiency of 19% or higher.
The existing Blacksolar, which has already been released, has a module conversion efficiency of up to 16.5% (rated output). Though its cell conversion efficiency has not been disclosed, Sharp said that it has drastically improved cell conversion efficiency for the new Blacksolar.
Specifically, the company increased the numbers of p- and n-layers on the back side of the cell as well as the numbers of p- and n-electrodes.
Sharp has not revealed when to commercialize the new cell but said, "We have been engaged in the development of the cell for commercialization."
