Sony Corp developed a Blu-ray Disc (BD) player that supports 4k2k video and exhibited it at the 2012 International CES, a trade show for consumer electronics, which runs from Jan 10 to 13, 2012, in Las Vegas, the US.

The player can up-convert BD contents, etc to 4k2k video and display it by using a projector or TV supporting 4k2k video. Though its price has not been determined yet, it is scheduled to be released in the second quarter of 2012.

The BD player and a display device are connected via an HDMI cable. It seemed that Sony used the 1.4 version of HDMI because it supports the transmission of 4k2k video.

The player can be connected to the Internet by using its built-in wireless LAN function. And it is possible to use the video distribution service, etc of the "Sony Entertainment Network," which is an online service provided by Sony. Also, smartphones and tablet computers including the iPhone, iPad and Android-based machines can be used as remotes of the player.

Sony has been accelerating the development of display devices supporting 4k2k video. For example, it commercialized a home-use LCD projector capable of displaying 4k2k video in 2011.
