Continued from [Kinect Teardown (3)] 3-layer Structure Found Inside
We removed the cooling fan, the lower chassis and the front chassis of the Kinect from its main body so that we could see the entire three-layer module.
An infrared laser, a camera for infrared light, a camera used to detect visible light and other optical parts were found on the first (front most) layer. The middle layer was mounted with a middle-size circuit board and a small circuit board, and the third layer was equipped with a large circuit board.
On the first layer, the infrared laser, the camera for infrared light and the camera used to detect visible light were placed in black rubber cases and attached to a large metal part.
The black cases were used probably to prevent laser light from leaking and unnecessary light from entering the infrared camera and the visible light camera. Also, an engineer inferred that the large metal part was employed to efficiently cool the camera and more importantly the laser.
"What is this?" said an engineer who was looking at two yellow stickers attached to the metal part.
One was located below the infrared layer, and the other was found obliquely below the visible light camera. The engineer presumed that the sticker near the laser was used for insulating or grounding because part of the flexible circuit board connected to the laser was in contact with the sticker.
However, we could not figure out the usage of the other sticker. It seemed that it would take some time to find the usage. Though we were curious about it, we decided to continue the teardown because we had no time to lose.
