Three Korean panel makers exhibited see-through displays at FPD International 2010/Green Device 2010, a trade show taking place in Chiba City, Japan.
Samsung Electronics Co Ltd and LG Display Co Ltd showed LCD see-through displays while Samsung Mobile Display Co Ltd (SMD) exhibited OLED see-through displays. They have so far showcased prototypes with a similar concept at trade shows in and outside Japan (See related article 1, 2, 3).
Samsung Electronics showed 23- and 46-inch LCD displays while LG Display exhibited a 47-inch LCD display. The three displays use natural light as backlight during daylight hours of a sunny day. During night time hours, they use a transparent backlight unit attached to the backs of their LCD panels.
"LEDs are arranged on the four sides of the display, and we use a light guide plate," a staffer of LG Display said.
On the other hand, SMD showcased 14- and 19-inch OLED displays. Each pixel of the displays has a "see-through" area. The transmittances of the 14- and 19-inch displays are 38% and 30%, respectively. The 14-inch display is a top emission type while the 19-inch display is a bottom emission type.
