Toshiba Corp will release the "Glass-less 3D Regza GL1" series of 3D TVs, which can be viewed without special glasses, late in December 2010 in Japan.
The GL1 will come in two sizes: 20 and 12 inches. And their expected retail prices are ¥240,000 (approx US$2,879) and ¥120,000, respectively. Toshiba aims to sell 1,000 units of each model per month. The company announced that it would launch 3D TVs viewable with the naked eye at IFA2010, which took place in September 2010 in Berlin, Germany (See related article).
"Toshiba's 3D technologies were developed for impressive reality," said Masaaki Osumi, head of Toshiba's visual products business. "To meet that goal, we developed the 3D TVs viewable without glasses. We will commercialize glass-less 3D TVs ahead of other companies"
When asked about the prices of the new 3D TVs, Osumi said, "The cost of the 20-inch model is not low enough for the price of ¥240,000," implying that the TVs will not turn out much profit.

"We developed the GL1 by using Toshiba's collective technical strength, which consists of our panel technologies and engine technologies," Osumi said.
As for the panel technologies, the LCD panel of the GL1 is manufactured by Toshiba Mobile Display Co Ltd (TMD), a subsidiary of Toshiba Corp. For displaying 3D images, the new 3D TVs use TMD's "Integral Imaging Method," which uses lenticular lenses placed on the front side of the LCD panel.
3D images of the TVs can be viewed from angles of up to ±15° from the center, and the number of viewpoints is nine. When a 3D image is being displayed, the 20-inch and the 12-inch models have pixel counts of 1,280 x 720 (8,294,000 pixels) and 466 x 350 (1,470,000 pixels), respectively.
