The optical pickups of the second-generation (left) and the latest (right) PS3 models. Though both of them have two objective lenses, there are some small differences. For example, metal parts next to the objective lens are seen only in the left picture.
The three-terminal element seen in the lower left seems to be a blue-violet semiconductor laser, and the four-terminal element seen in the lower right is probably a two-wavelength laser for CDs and DVDs. In this structure, light from the blue-violet semiconductor laser is reflected from a mirror placed right in front of the laser, goes to another mirror in the upper center of the picture (a bluish part) and exits in the direction of the objective lenses (outward journey). In a homeward journey, light reflected from the recording surface of an optical disc passes through the objective lens and is refracted by the bluish mirror. And the light goes straight to the light receiving element seen in the left. Also, light from the two-wavelength laser seems to follow a similar path. In its outward journey, the light is reflected from a mirror placed right in front of the two-wavelength laser, goes to another mirror in the lower center of the picture (a yellowish part) and exits in the direction of the objective lenses. In its homeward journey, light reflected from the recording surface of an optical disc passes through the objective lens, is refracted by the yellowish mirror and goes straight to the light receiving element seen in the right. After tearing down the power supply module, we started to work on the Blu-ray Disc (BD) device, which is smaller than that in the former models of the PS3.
First, we removed the metal covers on the top and bottom of the device.
"It seems that they got used to designing a Blu-ray Disc device," an engineer said.
In fact, the number of parts mounted on a small substrate in the device, such as controller LSI chips, connectors and passive components, was decreased. The engineer said that the BD device is evolving in the same way as CD and DVD devices.
The optical pickup of the latest BD device has two objective lenses: one for Blu-ray discs and the other for CDs and DVDs. The optical pickup of the BD device in the first-generation PS3 is equipped with only one objective lens for Blu-ray discs, CDs and DVDs.
Though using two objective lenses increases the number of components, it enables to use existing parts for CD and DVD devices and lower costs. It seems that Sony has been using two objective lenses for the PS3 for some time. In fact, we found two lenses in the optical pickup of the second-generation PS3 (model number: CECHH00), which was released in November 2007.
Though both the latest and the second-generation PS3 models have an optical pickup with two lenses, some cost-cutting efforts were seen in the optical pick up of the latest PS3, such as the removal of the metal plates attached to the sides of the lenses.
We took off a metal cover of the optical head to check the optical system. Please read the caption of the last picture forsestimate on the optical path.
We disassembled the cooling system, power supply module, and BD device and moved on to examine the main board.
