AU Optronics Corp (AUO) of Taiwan will exhibit a series of LCD panels manufactured under the concept of low power consumption and small package volume at FPD International 2008.

The company plans to highlight its "green panel technology" by exhibiting panels of all sizes, from a 46-inch panel for TVs to an 8.9-inch panel for mini-notebook PCs.

The 46-inch panel features a weight, thickness and power consumption 30% less than those of existing products. In addition, the packing efficiency was enhanced by 66% by devising the product design, according to the company. AUO will also exhibit a 46-inch panel thinner than 1cm, which was realized by using a LED backlight source.

AUO will also introduce a 46-inch full HD LCD panel that has a contrast ratio of 200,000:1, an RGB LED backlight and local dimming technology. The contrast was enhanced to 200,000:1 and the power consumption was reduced by 50% at the same time by controlling the luminance while adjusting the RBG balance at 1,296 points in the panel. It features 10-bit gradations, and the color reproduction range is 133% of the NTSC standard.

Energy-saving technologies employed in panels for notebook PCs and mobile devices

In respect to the panels for notebook PCs and mobile devices, the company will exhibit an 8.9-inch WSVGA panel for mini-notebook PCs, a 13.3-inch panel for notebook PCs and a 10.1-inch WVGA panel for mobile devices, etc.

The power consumption was reduced by more than 45% for the 8.9-inch panel designed for a mini-notebook PC. It was developed in order to extend the continuous operation time of mini-notebook PC batteries to six hours, according to AUO.

The power consumption of the 13.3-inch panel for use in a notebook PC was reduced by 45% by using an LED backlight. The LCD panel was developed in hopes of extending the battery life of notebook PCs by 1.5 hours.

The low power consumption of the 10.1-inch WVGA panel was realized by using an LED backlight and a driver IC. In respect to the LED backlight, its power consumption was reduced by 50% by adopting a "CABC (Content Adaptive Backlight Control)," which allows adjustment of the luminance depending on the ambient brightness. And the power consumption of the Driver IC was reduced by 40% by adopting "APSD (Advanced Power Saving Display)" technology and reducing the number of source drivers to one.

Because of the aforementioned reductions in power consumption, "now we can offer energy-saving LCD panels intended for mobile DVD players and digital photo frames," AUO said.
