Nintendo Co Ltd announced the "DSi," the next-generation version of the Nintendo DS portable game console.
Its new features include a built-in camera and a music player function. Also, the DSi will come with a 3.25-inch LCD panel, which is larger than the previous model's 3-inch panel. It will be released in Nov 1, 2008, at the price of ¥18,900 (approx US$180) in Japan.
Nintendo plans to suggest various applications software that utilize the camera and music player function.
The DSi is 2.6mm thinner than the DS Lite. Its width and depth are 137mm and 74.9mm, respectively, increases of 4mm and 1mm from the DS Lite. While the DSi is newly equipped with an SD memory card slot, it does not have a slot for Game Boy Advance cartridges this time.
The pixel count of the camera, which has a lens on both sides of the chassis, is about 300,000. The DSi is preinstalled with software that enables to color in and process pictures taken by the camera with a touch pen.
Furthermore, with the new sound function, the DSi can use applications software developed for playing music, studying a language and so forth. The LCD panel is a 260K transmissive TFT color LCD. The effective speed of its wireless LAN communication was enhanced by improving software, Nintendo said.
