Sony Corp announced "COM-2," a new model of handheld terminal "mylo." It will be released in the US at the end of January 2008. It is equipped with a sliding QWERTY keyboard and the users can enjoy Web browsing, chat and verbal communication.
The price is approximately US$300. It is targeted for teenagers who enjoy chat services.
Two major changes have been made to the previous model. One is the size of the LCD panel, which was increased from 2.4-inch to 3.5-inch, adding a touch panel. The other is the addition of Adobe Flash Lite 3. Users can now browse video contents including YouTube and enjoy Flash games.
YouTube Widget introducing popular video contents was loaded to enhance the operability of YouTube. Other widgets such as Google Search Widget, MyContacts Widget, RSS Widget and Facebook Notifier are also offered.
The wireless LAN supports IEEE802.11b and 802.11g. Users have a free access to the hotspot of Wayport in the US until 2010. They can enjoy chat services such as AIM, Google Talk and Yahoo! Messenger as well as verbal communication via Skype.
The terminal, which supports digital rights manager Windows Media DRM 10, allows users to play WMA files supporting the DRM. In addition, it also plays MP3, AAC, and ATRAC audio formats as well as MPEG-4 and MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 video content.
With a 1.3-megapixel camera module integrated in the terminal, users can edit the images and upload them to SNS or blogs. The capacity of the 1G flash memory can be expanded using memory stick Duo. The secondary battery allows 20 hours of music playback, six hours of Skype talk and seven hours of video playback.
