SoftBank Mobile Corp and Walt Disney Japan Co Ltd announced Nov 12, 2007, that they will collaborate in the mobile phone business and start a local service in Japan in the spring of 2008.
On the same day, the companies applied to Japan's Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications for a telecom business license to provide mobile phone service in Japan.
The two companies plan to start a service named "Disney Mobile." Although details have not been announced yet, SoftBank Mobile and the Walt Disney Japan will reportedly tie up for mobile phone handsets, relevant services, the development of mobile phone content, marketing and service provision, etc.
The Walt Disney Japan said, "Based on experience in our mobile phone content business in Japan, we are certain that there are strong needs for a deeper, integrated Disney experience that combines content services with mobile phones."
Meanwhile, SoftBank Mobile commented, "Our new mobile phone service is backed by Disney's achievements as an official content provider, which were built up over the last seven years since Disney began providing contents services in Japan."
