At FPD International 2007, LCD panel manufacturers are giving a large portion of their space to the presentation of so-called "information displays" that display advertisements and information at public sites.
There are two reasons why the manufacturers are fortifying their information displays as a business. One is to pioneer applications for large LCD panels that differ from TVs and other consumer products and follow economic fluctuations. The other is that information displays are optimal objects to test new technologies on. In particular, many manufacturers have presented panels designed for the latter purpose.
In TV application, display specifications are partially limited by image sources such as broadcasts and packaged video. Hence, even if specifications such as resolution and color reproduction range are enhanced, they tend to become unused treasures unless source video quality catches up with the enhanced specifications.
Because information displays need to be outstanding, demand is potentially strong for new technologies to highlight displayed information. In addition, data to be displayed have no standards like broadcast, with which monitors have to comply. Based on such circumstances, it is relatively easy to apply new technologies to information displays.
Major information displays being showcased at FPDI are as follows.
ChiMei Optronics Corp (CMO) of Taiwan has presented a 26-inch three-dimensional (3D) display that allows viewers to see 3D images without wearing 3D glasses.
"We consider there is considerable demand for 3D video because it draws much attention partly aided by people's curiosity," CMO said.
Sharp Corp has showcased a 4096 × 2160, so-called 2K4K resolution panel as an information display. Although displaying the same specification panel for digital cinemas as well, "We consider the information display application is easier to commercialize. We are therefore planning to brush-up our technology and increase applications in that market," Sharp said.
CMO has also showcased a 3840 × 2160 resolution 56-inch LCD panel, but the company assumes TV application for this one.
Other than these two manufacturers, LG. Philips LCD Co Ltd of South Korea presented a 47-inch LCD information display added with multi touch screen capability, and Samsung Electronics Co Ltd of Korea exhibited an 82-inch LCD panel with luminance increased to 1,200cd/m2.
